I then steer the conversation to how they visualize each putt. To simplify the process, I like to use a WellPutt BigTilt platform with the Well Line laser projection system. How you aim is a function of how you see visualize the putt. Basically, which line in the drawing above do you notice first. I happen to see the white curved line to the hole and the yellow start line is secondary. Many of my players are just the opposite. They see the yellow line and the curved line is secondary. Then I classify each payer into one of four categories. Are you linear or non-linear. Which line do you notice first. Then are you a specific aimer or a non-specific aimer. People who aim a line on the ball would be examples of specific aimers. Those who prefer to match alignment to start direction are more non-specific. Like all things in golf. Everyone is different. I could probably write a book on the different experiences I have had just with how players visualize their putts. The important thing is for you to figure out what works best for you and create a habit of looking at every putt the same way.

Disclaimer - I am an affiliate for WellPutt. So for what is worth, I offer these suggestions on why a great stroke might result in a missed putt.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">5. Let’s start with the obvious one, a poor read. This is always going to be a work in progress, as every putt will be unique. Even the exact same putt can change depending on the day. Often the inability to find an appropriate start line or direction is more of a problem than seeing the actual break. I have recently had some experience with the WellPutt Big Tilt and WellLine Visualization System. It is amazing to see the reaction of players, when the start line is projected along with the actual path to the hole. It is almost never what was expected and often they don’t believe it until they hit the putt. Understanding the metrics of a rolling ball is important to being a better putter. https://wellputt.com/us/cms/17-bigtilt-contact

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4. Inability to strike the ball on a consistent point on the putter face. As we look to develop a feel for speed, how fast the ball leaves the putter and in what direction it travels it is an enormous help to strike the ball on a consistent spot on the putter. Years ago Dave Pelz showed that the better the putter the smaller the dispersion of impact points on the putter face. There is no getting around it. If you don’t strike the ball where you set the putter in the first place, the odds of the putt being missed climbs dramatically. I will leave the discussion of “more forgiving” for another time. We are talking about made putts as opposed to narrow misses for the purpose of this discussion.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">3. Bad Balance. One of the great understandings I have developed from my work utilizing concepts from Mike Adams, Terry Rowles and the Ultimate Golf Lesson is the concept of how we use ground forces for STABILITY when we putt. I look to find an anchor point in the stroke. This is measured from front foot to trail foot and from heel to toe and it is unique for each player. Why? It is very simple. If you are off balanced based on individual tendencies during your stroke - YOUR HANDS WILL REACT - and a subconscious movement that repeats itself becomes a conscious one that has to be manipulated.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">https://theultimategolflesson.com/
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">2. Poor Trail Hand Orientation. The biggest battle most of us have in our putting stroke is how to control the trail hand. Another huge discovery I received from the measurements of the Ultimate Golf Lesson is how different players have impact tendencies in the orientation of their trail hand. Matching these tendencies to your static grip is crucial in controlling the putter Speed and Direction in equal measure. Game Changer!!

https://theultimategolflesson.com/

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">1. Consistent Ball Position. If your stroke repeats, the ball position required relative to the center of rotation of the stroke must repeat as well. I use the balance point of the body at the base of the neck as the reference. Where the ball positioned relative to this point is often the difference between make and miss. You spend a great deal of time learning a repeating stroke, but much less time finding a repeating ball position relative to the stroke. So if the ball is positioned a little forward or back of the correct point this results in enough variance in the strike to miss the putt. Watch the very best putters on television. Notice how meticulous they are in their set up. It is a critical part of their success.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">If you would like to go into depth, I have some open spots available for stroke evaluations. We have developed a system that allows me to achieve this online and has been proven to be helpful for a number of players. It takes about 30 days on average to go through the process and requires a cell phone to take videos. A helper or tripod is useful as well.
Bruce Rearickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001298629397654610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908164371524777440.post-2663400862858807692023-01-02T17:33:00.001-05:002023-01-02T17:33:06.825-05:00Ultimate Golf Lesson at PGA Show.

So very grateful to be working with Mike, Terry, Dr. Cheetham and Dr. Duffey again.

Click this link for more information on how to sign up. www.ultimategolflesson.com

See you in Orlando!!

Bruce Rearickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001298629397654610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908164371524777440.post-64425079007669220122022-11-09T12:55:00.001-05:002023-01-02T11:38:48.831-05:00Breaking the Average Barrier - Part 4<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As I continue to compare average performances on the putting greens with an exceptional ones, rarely do I hear comments about the quality of the putting stroke. More often I hear comments about the ability to see or predict the path of the putt, "I could really see the line today." Or a comment like, “ I had a good feel for the greens today.” You can call this aspect of putting a number of things. Read, visualization, decision making, and many more are accurate descriptions of the pre-putt process. Being an old guy, I prefer the term visualization, as that is the phrase that my mentors used to describe the process. So for the sake of this discussion let's use that term.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As I was taught, visualization is a two part process. First part, the ability to “see or picture” the path the ball will travel as I calibrate the texture of the grass and the influence of the slopes. The second part is the ability to “feel” how much effort will be required to match what I see. Think of this combination, as a complete rehearsal of the upcoming event in your head.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: left;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: left;">The secret of visualization is the ability to match what you see to how it will feel.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As every player and every putt form a unique combination, there is no possible “one size fits all” solution to this problem. The following are some thought provokers on how to build your visualization strategy.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">As you process the requirements of the putt, how do apply the conclusions to your choice of direction?<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";"> For example do you see the direction of the putt in a linear manner, or straight line to a point left or right of the hole? Or do you see the putt as a curved path from start to finish. Or do you see it as a combination of both.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">How do you create speed with the putter?<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; white-space: pre;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Do you regulate the effort based on the strike,<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">or the length of the stroke, or do you change the rhythm of your stroke to increase or decrease the tempo. (BTW the latter is a very successful technique that has been coached out of many strategies)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">How do you process the distance the ball must travel?
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; white-space: pre;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Do you do it numerically? Where the effort is calibrated to a number. Much like I would with a full swing club.

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; white-space: pre;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Do you process it visually? Do I putt to a mental picture. Or do I look at the hole when I putt.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">How do you transfer the process of defining distance to a feel?
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; white-space: pre;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Mentally - A subconscious effort?
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; white-space: pre;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Physically - Practice strokes?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">These are some of many questions I ask in my sessions online or face to face. Each answer produces the next question. It is interesting how these understandings lead to answers of mechanical problems much like a discussion of mechanical issues help visualization skills. The key point is they are not separate. Feel or mechanics have to match visualization or decision process.

Bruce Rearickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001298629397654610noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908164371524777440.post-11016805632347563282022-10-07T09:38:00.000-04:002022-10-07T09:38:42.490-04:00Online Program Updates.<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I have been fortunate to have had a number of inquiries recently pertaining to my live instruction and online lessons. I would like to publicly express my gratitude for the opportunity to work with players and instructors from all over the world.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The following describes the two online programs I offer.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The fee for an online lesson is $250.00. It consists of 4 parts.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We find the appropriate distance from the ball and and the proper ball position that helps you aim and perceive the target accurately.

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Based on the length of your arms as they relate to your height, we find the posture that keeps you in a balanced position over the ball. These first two are tied closely together and the discussion is interchangeable.

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Once the set up is decided, we build the stroke mechanics that best suit the requirements of the ball position. This is where I differ from the industry. I build each stroke to match ball position, where most adjust ball position to the movement.

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Finally, we look at the putter and question whether it compliments or interferes with the first 3 decisions.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I consider strategic decisions and speed control issues a different lesson, as we can’t really have that discussion without an understanding of the first. I was having a challenging time following the reasoning. With my online work, the first thing I usually do is build a model of the player, this allows me to adjust on the model rather than having to ask the player to experiment. If I make this adjustment to the model how would that influence the stroke? So, I built a model to help me think it through.

<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Please understand that I offer this as an example of how I analyze a putting stroke and it in no way is intended to contradict or criticize someone else’s take on the situation.
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">This is the model of the player. The purple line is a reference to balance over the feet from heel to toe. The angle of red line and black line helps me understand how far the player is from the ball. The black line happens to be under the eyes in this case, which is not always true. Each model will differ. The grey arrow helps me understand the plane of motion, defined by the source and sequence of motion. There are three basic source categories and successful examples of each. Core/Shoulder rotation, Shoulder Joints and Arm swing, or hands swing, and body reacts. The coach defined the stroke as a core/shoulder source.
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The problem as he described it was an excessive rotation of the putter head, which created an open face at impact and a push miss. So, if you ask, “Why would this model have more rotation than would be required to keep the putter in a consistent position relative to the path?”; the answer would be found in an examination of the shoulder blades relative to the ball or the purple arrow. Anytime the grey arrow is above the red distance angle, and the shoulders activate the motion, we see more rotation than is required, assuming no other manipulation of the putter. You might comment that the shoulder joints could move on a vertical rocking motion, but in that case the head would move forward on the back swing and away from the target on the forward swing. He doesn't move his head. Given this player’s level of success the argument could be made that the putter is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Tiger Woods has done very well with more rotation than required. The argument for this player could be made that the problem is not as much the extra rotation in the backswing, as it is the lack of release, or forward swing rotation. So why does he block?
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">For most if not all, of the best strokes we have analyzed, we see a common theme, the base of the neck over the tips of the toes as shown below. The reason this is important is quite simple.
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p3" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">When the player is tilted too far toward the ball,
<p class="p3" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">like the model, they get stuck and can’t finish the stroke.
<p class="p3" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Now the discussion becomes, does the player push because of too much rotation, or does the push come because he can’t finish the stroke when he leans into the ball?
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">My solution if I was ever asked would be to keep the putter you have, stop leaning into the tips of your toes and let the putter swing. Your rotation through the ball might be the best part of your putting stroke.
Bruce Rearickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001298629397654610noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908164371524777440.post-20226971277065939112021-12-28T10:41:00.000-05:002021-12-28T10:41:31.760-05:00Breaking the Average Barrier – Part 3 <div class="OutlineElement Ltr BCX4 SCXW4508395" style="-webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); clear: both; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); cursor: text; direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe UI Web", Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 0px; position: relative; user-select: text;">

“It is much more important to understand what a putt feels like as opposed to what it looks like.”<span class="EOP SCXW4508395 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18.3458px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr BCX4 SCXW4508395" style="-webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); clear: both; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); cursor: text; direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe UI Web", Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 0px; position: relative; user-select: text;">

I do not think anyone would argue that ball speed control is critical to being better than average at putting. This was about the same time that Trackman was introduced, so it was the early age of technology for teaching and fitting. While the skeptics outnumbered the believers at the time, I was convinced the technology was the code breaker for putting. Now 15 years later, we have a million times better understanding of the geometry and mechanics involved in the putting stroke. However, over the last 10 years we have not seen any statistical improvement. On Tour we still make about 50% of our putts from 8 feet, which I believe is a benchmark stat, and it has been that way for 10 years. The stats guys will start firing corrections at me at this point, but regardless how we position the numbers, the stats do not tell us why we aren't any better. What they do tell us, clearly, is that ON AVERAGE we have not gotten better! <span class="EOP SCXW245028429 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 17px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<span class="EOP SCXW245028429 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 17px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr BCX4 SCXW245028429" style="-webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); clear: both; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); cursor: text; direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe UI Web", Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 0px; position: relative; user-select: text;">
When it comes to golf Average is a lousy standard. It is fair to say that those at the highest skill level control impact better than those who are average performers. There have been several studies pertaining to impact that all show the same result. The smaller the dispersion of impact points on the putter the better the performance. Finding the center of the putter is a feel-based task. You make a stroke that provides solid impact, you will copy the feel of that stroke. The problem with many modern designs is that they mask the feedback. An off-center strike “feels” the same as a solid one. The problem is, even with all the technology to help, with a strike on the toe or heel comes different ball performance. What you feel will not match your expectations of read. In effect, you never learn. <span class="EOP SCXW245028429 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 17px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<span class="EOP SCXW245028429 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 17px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<span class="EOP SCXW245028429 BCX4" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}" face="Calibri, Calibri_EmbeddedFont, Calibri_MSFontService, sans-serif" style="-webkit-nbsp-mode: normal !important; -webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 17px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;">

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr BCX4 SCXW245028429" style="-webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); clear: both; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); cursor: text; direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe UI Web", Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 0px; position: relative; user-select: text;">

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr BCX4 SCXW245028429" style="-webkit-user-drag: none; -webkit-user-select: text; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); clear: both; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.847); cursor: text; direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe UI Web", Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 0px; position: relative; user-select: text;">
This concept is so important that has become my priority as an instructor. It can be visual, it can be feel based. It depends on how you see the putt. Direct target (spot), indirect target (alignment /path based), all the way to the hole, or just a segment? Do you aim the ball, or aim the putter? No best way.
Bruce Rearickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07001298629397654610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5908164371524777440.post-32010033396963151342021-01-12T15:32:00.002-05:002021-01-12T15:32:17.831-05:00Random Putting Thoughts
Working in your putting this winter? When we talk about developing a feel for speed control in
putting, we are discussing controlling effort and momentum. How much effort
does it take to get the putter started, to change directions at the end of the
backswing, and how much effort to arrive at the ball in the proper position and
speed.

It doesn't take much to find discussions on how to apply the
effort. You will hear and read plenty about how to control effort. For example,
in our online course, Burnt Edges identifies the initial source of the movement
and the sequence of movement that brings you back to the ball. Do you control
effort with your core, your shoulders, your hands or a combination? But even if
you identify the source of the effort you have only solved part of the problem.
More important is when do you apply the effort? Unfortunately,
that subject has been one of those you are basically left to discover on your
own, unless you are working with a knowledgeable instructor.

As much as any other factor, understanding timing is the key
to better putting. The timing of your stroke is integral to controlling the
putter face, speed and position at impact, no matter how you perceive the task.
Timing is typically measured in two ways. Total time to impact and the ratio of
backswing time to forward swing to impact. Total time of the stroke is another
measurement you might see. But it is an indirect way of analyzing as the follow
through portion is a variable that has an indirect influence on impact.

I have quite a large data base of measurements. The median
time for all strokes to impact is 1 second. I might as well save myself the
analysis as that is the conclusion of most diagnostic technology manufacturers.
I have seen successful strokes as quick as .75 and as slow as 1.3. I use 1
second as a reference between up tempo strokes and slower tempo strokes. Are
you more like Brandt Snedeker around .7 or Loren Roberts at 1.2? It helps as we examine time to impact that we
measure in 3 intervals. I like 5 feet, 15 feet and 30 feet. Not as much for
convenience but these are distances centered in ranges the statistics people
have identified as crucial to scoring. Many are surprised to learn that in the
best performers, there is little difference in time to impact between the three
distances. They use different length strokes, at a different pace, within a
similar time frame.

Me at 600 grams total weight.

The next step in understanding effort and timing is to
consider the ratio of backswing time to time to impact. This ratio is often
shown as backswing to forward swing. The accepted range is around 2-1, where
the backswing takes twice as long as the forward swing. Again, I don’t consider
this as the target score! Only a reference number. If you like a slow backswing
and an accelerating stroke through the ball then your ratio is going more than
2-1. Some players are a little quicker in the backswing and apply less effort
going forward, so their forward swing time will be a bit slower. Remember your
best putting stroke is like a fingerprint. Every successful one is a little
different than another.
Now, I have said all that to tell you this. Nothing has
more influence on the timing of your putting stroke than the weight of the
putter! You can practice for three months with your current putter and not
achieve the results you can in 10 strokes with a weight change. It has taken me
10 years of research to understand it, but now that I do I can see a clear path
to helping players more quickly. If on your own or with your instructor you
think timing creates an issue in your stroke, first consider the overall weight
of your putter and how that weight is distributed. Then remember that lighter
is faster and heavier is slower. You might save yourself some time. Stay safe!

Part 2

Last week we started a discussion about how the weight of
your putter can influence your stroke. As we discuss weight there are two
things to consider. First, is the overall
weight of the putter. This is usually measured in grams and can range from 500
to 700 grams. The second is how the weight is distributed across the putter. Traditionally,
this has been expressed as swing weight. Over the past couple of years, I have
been looking for a more accurate description. We have an in-house procedure
that in its basic form tells us if the putter is head heavy or grip heavy. As
putter design has evolved and more options have been provided for all
components, this creates a new set of variables to consider as you look for the
tool to match the task. The problems to consider in simple terms are more
weight or less weight and where do you put it.

Here is an example I see quite often. A top-level player, coached by one of my clients,
was fit by a manufacturer at their facility. She was fit in the recommended
model of putter, at a length and lie. When the player was asked her preference
pertaining to weight the reply was, “I prefer heavy”. The fitter put more
weight where it was easiest to add the weight, all in the putter head. The
putter spec’d at swing weight D-8.5 and an overall weight of 565 grams at 34
inches. When you look at the stats alone there would be no reason for alarm. A
little heavier than standard swing weight and total weight, but that was the
player’s preference.

Now let’s talk about issues we see with this player. The
primary complaint was a right miss and a tendency to leave the ball short. At
impact, the putter is delofted an average of 3+° at impact with a static
measurement of 3° of putter loft. The illustration below is what we see on
Capto. I do not have permission to share the player’s personal information, so
I have cut the bottom of the screen image. First, we know from years of looking
at reports combined with player interviews that forward shaft lean is often an
anti-pull compensation. Next, without getting too deep in the weeds about
personal coaching preferences concerning launch angle and the loft / putter
rise angle combination as it pertains to roll, I can suggest without any
reservation, when you get a negative loft angle at impact, regardless of rise
angle, you run into problems. We have discussed this in previous posts at https://bargolfinstruction.blogspot.com/2018/02/the-diagram-above-is-meant-to-depict.html
.

In this case it is a problem, not because it happens every
time but because it happens randomly, which is worse. Most putts for this
player are launched around 1 degree or less, and a sense of feel is developed
based on that launch condition. But in this case, there is a tendency to deloft
more often than add loft and those putts that launch into the ground don’t roll
out the same. This changes the feel for speed and creates doubt during the
round. If 2.5 mph rolls the ball 10 feet at a 1° launch. That is our
expectation. But a -1° degree launch is unpredictable, but more likely dependent
on ground conditions. Cruising through the round and things are going well,
then drive one into the turf and get an unexpected result. Now the second-guessing
takes hold and our rhythm and confidence is in doubt. The first Capto
screen capture shows the putter coming into the ball and you can see the
evidence of the putter lean. From a putter perspective we must ask if by
driving the ball into the ground we bring friction into play early and at a
higher level than if we had launched the ball clean. Does this launch condition
and increased friction impact the ball speed?
The next example is the same player, same stroke. In this
case we are looking at the acceleration profile of the putter stroke and the
speed the acceleration creates. In this graph the green line represents a
pendulum movement of the putter. The yellow line is the point in the stroke
where the putter transitions from backswing to forward swing. The purple line
is the bottom point in the arc.

In the interview with Tony Wright https://gameimprovementgolf.com/149-putter-weighting-101-bruce-rearick-interview/
I mentioned the analogy of a huge tanker. I think that best describes what we
see in a pendulum acceleration profile. The boat/putter starts in one direction
with the hammer down. As it gets closer to its end it reverses the engines, but
momentum carries it in the same direction until you reach the end of the
backswing. Therefore, you see the acceleration in the opposite direction even
while the boat/putter moves to the end of the backswing. Then as it comes
forward the initial acceleration or effort peaks and a combination of gravity
and momentum takes it to impact. In our player’s profile we see no effort in
the backswing, very little effort in the forward swing until about halfway to
impact. The assumption is this is a function of control. The player controls
the effort all the way through the stroke, then hammers the putter as if she is
trying to beat a yellow caution light.

Why does this happen? Slow back and delofted has been a
common teaching method. But in this case if you ask if it is intentional the
answer is no. My contention is this is a reaction to a putter that is too
heavy. The head lags as the putter comes forward. Momentum combined with effort
carries the putter to the ball at an increasing rate. Yet, notice how the
effort falls off dramatically at impact while the speed shown below does not. If the effort was maintained the speed increase would be more dramatic and the ball
would go miles past the hole. What you can’t see from these graphs is the slight
tendency to recoil at the end of the follow through. For this player the
solution is a work in progress. Not because of a lack of a plan, but because
brand loyalty inhibits our options. Another story for another day.

If you have any questions about the graph or using Capto
feel free to contact me. I will be glad to explain how I use it and my
interpretation of the data.

I recently recorded a podcast with Tony Wright of Game
Improvement Golf. I strongly urge you to learn more about Tony at his website https://gameimprovementgolf.com/.
It is an amazing resource and I think he mentioned I am podcast #149. I am
honored every time he asks me to participate as it is an impressive list of
interviews.
https://gameimprovementgolf.com/149-putter-weighting-101-bruce-rearick-interview/
Our topic for this session was the influence of putter
weight on the stroke. Tough subject to cover in 45 minutes, and I have been
kicking myself on missing some points I consider important.

Let me say from the start that I am in firmly in the stable
that believes too heavy is more detrimental to your stroke than too light. Controlling
the speed and direction a golf ball travels is all about that first word, control.
Unfortunately, when it comes to putters there is a tendency to choose what we
prefer over what we need. Considering the weight you prefer, it helps to remember the heavier the putter the more
we cede control of the stroke to the putter. Eventually the putter swings you
rather than you swinging the putter. That heavier weight can give you
a false sense of control. Your stroke feels slower and smoother, but your results
don’t match your feel.

To control how far the ball rolls, you must consider many things,
most important is speed of the putter at impact and the launch conditions of
the ball leaving the putter. These are the main contributors to how fast the
ball is moving when it starts true roll. True roll is the point when gravity and friction overcome the initial ball velocity and the ball no longer skids. Usually between 5 and 20 percent of the distance the ball travels. Speed at true roll is the most
important parameter in determining distance. Right away some are going to say I
skipped where I strike the ball on the face as a factor. I think this is secondary as I can overcome a
poor hit with more speed. Tour guys do it all the time. Doesn’t feel the same,
but that is a story for another day.

I recently started using a new technology for me, produced
by CaptoGolf from Italy. It has given me a new perspective on the data I have
collected over the years. As I measure putts, I can clearly see the influence
of putter weight in what we call the transition areas. A putter changes
direction several times in a putting stroke. It has to start away from the
ball, it has to move vertically as it follows the arc defined by the stroke, it
has to stop at the end of the back swing then turn and start back toward the
ball. All with the hopes that it is moving at the proper speed, with the proper
launch conditions in two planes, vertical launch and horizontal direction. When
the putter is too heavy, controlling the putter at all these points becomes difficult.
Basically, once it gets started it becomes difficult to get it to stop. Especially
on short putts that require a shorter stroke.

The following is a screen shot from a measurement using
Capto. The player uses an extremely heavy putter. It weighs in excess of 650
grams, total weight. The picture shows the position of the putter-face relative
to the path the putter moves. The green line represents the path and the aqua
line represents the position of the face relative to the green line. Below the green
line is closed to the path and above the green line is open. The putter is
opening as the line moves up and closing as it moves down. The yellow vertical
line represents the end of the back swing and start of the forward swing. Even
if you have never seen this representation before you notice the blue line is
moving all over the place. There is a lot to talk about in this stroke, but for
today I would ask you to focus on the transition of backswing to forward swing at the yellow vertical line.
Basically, you are looking at a total loss of control in the transition.

Our goal is to have more stability along the path. More like
this….

I know there are some instructors out there who would try to
fix this problem with by working with the player mechanics and there is no
reason not to go down that path. But in this case, her coach and I are
convinced this is a function of reaction to putter weight. Time will tell and unfortunately,
we are in a delay and won’t be able to measure the results of a lighter putter
with the same specifications. But for the time being I will take her word for
it that it is easier. More to come. Stay Safe out there and if you have time listen to the
podcast.
