The Next Ten Lessons

Lesson 166-Uncommon knowledge? Understanding what works for you. Study your mechanics. Start with your source of motion. #Lesson31

Lesson 167-More "forgiving" should not be your default position if you are looking to improve your putting! More forgiving=Less feedback.

Lesson 168-If you can't feel the location of the strike on the face of the putter, how can you make a correction? Too much of a good thing?

Lesson 169-Good balance + a consistent source of motion=a consistent strike pattern on the face of the putter. Common trait of best putters.

Lesson 170-Winter practice? Roll ball online (direction) with different stroke lengths (speed). Use impact tape-find a consistent strike.

Lesson 171-Use indoor practice time to perfect a consistent source of motion. Single arm, arms together, shoulders around spine. Pick one!

Lesson 172-A common mechanical conflict? Start the putter back differently every time. Success starts with consistent motion sequence.

Lesson 173-Making 1000 putts in a row indoors is no help unless you can adjust. Results don't count unless you understand the process

Lesson 174- Putting is a pass/fail exercise-no second chances. Repetitive practice on the same putt only teaches you how to make that putt.

Lesson 175-Learning to be a good putter might be more about knowing why you miss a putt than it is about why you make one. What goes wrong?

Putting Lessons 156-165

Lesson 156-Never change mechanics or read based on a single miss. Consistently wrong is better than randomly correct. You can't fix random.
Lesson 157-Putters have a rotational value defined by shaft axis to face, offset, distribution of weight and location of cog in putter head
Lesson 158-Arc size defines rotation. It heps to match grip size to rotation requirement. Bigger for less rotation. Smaller grip for more.
Lesson 159-Some of the great putting strokes of all time use more rotation than required by their path. Shoulders-arms-putter move in sync.
Lesson 160-SBST motion is simply an arc plane tilted upright. Perception of stroke must match posture. Don't force the arc.
Lesson 161-Don't be fooled by terminology. SBST sounds good, but in reality a very unforgiving method. Arc is more forgiving than straight.
Lesson 162-All putting strokes are rotary. Even those on an upright plane with the visual appearance of sbst. Think rotation-not path shape.
Lesson 163-Don't make changes based on illusions. Deal with the facts to avoid conflicts. Most common conflict? Perception of a sbst stroke.
Lesson 164-Before you can putt instinctively you must make a conscious effort to learn the task correctly. Putting is not an inherent skill.

Lesson 165-Common knowledge leads to common application of knowledge. Uncommon knowledge is what separates the great player from the common.

Putting Lessons 146-155

Lesson 146-Position the putter first! The reason you should have the proper putter fit. Putter must match where your eyes tell you to stand.
Lesson 147-No method is so superior that it is worth fighting your vision. Never force the set up. Let your eyes tell you where to stand.
Lesson 148-Most putting issues are a result of visual conflicts. Where do you see it best? You can't copy someone else find your own set up.
Lesson 149-Good putters allow the putter to rotate as required by the putter path and then let the stroke path bring the putter to square.
Lesson 150-The putter path creates rotation and not the player. Keeping the putter-face consistent to path direction is more efficient.
Lesson 151-Hardest thing to do in putting is to not react to feel. The putter opens and closes naturally. Let it happen. Re-active fix=miss.
Lesson 152-The better the player the more sensitive the feel. Mid stroke corrections never work. Reaction is random. You can't fix random.
Lesson 153-Conformity ruins creativity. Without creativity there is no excellence. Don't let common advice ruin your chance to excel.
Lesson 154-When you miss a putt something obviously went wrong. Be very slow to make a judgement. The "fix" is often worse than the mistake.

Lesson 155-When you examine a miss remember the following. Short is a probably a miss-hit not a mis-read. Blaming your read is the easy way.

Putting Lessons Update.

Lesson 136-When the putter is aimed correctly at address-Left eye dominant players will tend to see this as left and adjust by aiming right.
Lesson 137-When aimed correctly a right eye dominant player will often "see" the putter aimed to the right and adjust by aiming more left.
Lesson 138-Solving the conflicts of lessons 136 & 137 will go a long way to improving your putting. Work with-don't fight your tendencies
Lesson 139-Understanding eye dominance is about learning how you interpret what you see. You might differ from the norm. Your way=best way.
Lesson 140-We have found former baseball players, tend to use their lead eye, even if it is not their "dominant" eye when standing side on.
Moral to the story of Lesson 133-140? You have to discover for yourself how your vision influences your putting stroke. Don't assume!
Lesson 141-Moral to the story of Lessons 133-140? Your have to discover for yourself how your vision influences your putting. Never assume!
Lesson 142-Proper Aim is more about accurate awareness of desired direction than the position of the putter at address. Find the line.
Lesson 143-Aim. Position the putter first. Then build your stance based on the position of the putter. Aim the putter-don't aim your body
Lesson 144-Position the putter first! To be consistent you need a consistent reference. Length and lie of the putter is that reference.

Lesson 145-Position the putter first. Your eyes will tell you where to stand with the putter as a reference. Build your stroke from there.

Putting Lessons Continue 126-135

Lesson 126 -Track your misses. Improvement comes from an analysis of circumstance and result. Never sacrifice a strength, to fix a weakness.

Lesson 127-Track your misses. Look for patterns and tendencies based on circumstances. Focus your practice based on the your observations.

Lesson 128-Example of a common tendency? Right handed golfer misses a left to right putt, short and right consistently. Blocked release?

Lesson 129-There are three reasons for a missed putt. Poor mechanics, poor judgment, or a combination of the two. Blame mechanics first.

Lesson 130-When it comes to stroke mechanics there is no holy grail, no perfect method. Find what works for you, be consistent and adapt.

Lesson 131-Track your misses! Give consideration to putter influence on stroke. Are you using a mechanical method that matches your putter?

Lesson 132-Does your putter influence your stroke? Check your grip pressure. Too tight? You might have a conflict between path and putter.

Lesson 133-Aiming a putter is a process. First step in the process? Find your dominant eye. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocular_dominance

Lesson 134-Left eye players aim most accurately with the ball forward in their stance. Right eye are more accurate when the ball is back.

Lesson 135-You will aim best when the ball is under your dominant eye. Is this the best ball position for your stroke?

Next 10 Putting Lessons

Lesson 116-Balance is critical to a consistent stroke. Position of the feet are critical to balance. Feet move last to balance your set up.

Lesson 117-Uneven lies on the green requires an adjustment. Don't change distance from the ball. Adjust your knee flex to maintain balance.

Lesson 118-Match Lesson 117 with moving your hands up or down on the grip to maintain a consistent ball position and posture on uneven lies.

Lesson 119-It helps to fit a putter longer than needed. The game is played on uneven surfaces. More length allows you to adjust for balance.

Lesson 120-When you analyze your stroke on a perfect surface, think about the adjustments you need to make when conditions aren't perfect.Reply

Lesson 121- Is it possible that what we find works perfectly under laboratory conditions, might not produce the perfect results outdoors?

Lesson 122-Great putters adapt to different conditions. They don't recreate their method. Adapt don't overhaul is a key to improved putting.

Lesson123-Loft is your friend. It doesn't take much but you need some. Especially if your hands lead the putter and the shaft leans forward.

Lesson 124-Many golfers deloft the putter - lean the shaft forward - on longer putts. If you do, you need some loft on the putter to start.

Lesson 125-All players have preferences or favorite putts. Change strategy-not mechanics for better results on the putts where you struggle.

Putting Lessons 106-115

Lesson 106- A shift in balance during the stroke requires a reaction of the hands to compensate, otherwise you mishit the putt. Stay steady.

Lesson 107-Maintaining balance during your putting stroke requires a precise static fit. Check your impact points on the putter. Scattered?

Lesson 108-Balanced set up? Set up to the ball with your putter. Lift putter very slightly off the ground. Close your eyes. Are you stable?

Lesson 109-Balanced setup = Consistent impact on the putter. If this is true does this mean that a high moi head masks an unbalanced setup?

Lesson 110-Balance is key in putting. Body balance=stable posture. Stable posture=consistent stroke. Final piece of the puzzle? Putter Fit.

Lesson 111 - All putter fits should start without a putter. Forced postures regardless if forced by club or instructor DONT WORK.

Lesson 113-Consistency is critical in reading greens. The only way to predict where the ball will finish is to know where it will start.

Lesson 114-Consistency starts with set up. Putter first, eyes adjust, then hands, then shoulders, feet last. NOT feet first and then twist.

Lesson 115-Do you stand the same distance from the ball on right to left breaking putts as left to right? Many do not! See Lesson 114
